Rioja DOCa
Classic Rioja marries savoury, mature red fruit to the sweet-spice signature of long barrel ageing: leather, dried fruit, and tobacco over strawberry and cherry, traditionally carrying the vanilla-coconut-dill imprint of American oak.
Terroir
A patchwork of calcareous clay, ferrous (iron-rich) clay, and alluvial soils on terraces stepping down to the Ebro; the higher, cooler western zones lean to clay-limestone, the warmer eastern zone to alluvial and sandy soils.
The valley of the Ebro and its tributaries, sheltered to the north by the Sierra de Cantabria, which buffers the vineyards from wet Atlantic weather. Elevation and aspect vary widely across the three subzones.
Rioja straddles a climatic seam: an Atlantic influence in the west (Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa) gives fresher, higher-acid, more structured wines, while the Mediterranean-influenced east (Rioja Oriental) is warmer and drier, giving riper, fuller, higher-alcohol fruit. Blending across subzones is traditional.

These are tasting-tradition associations of grape, oak, and age, not claims about the bedrock.
Classification
Rioja is one of only two Spanish regions elevated to Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) — Spain's top tier, above ordinary DO — becoming the first in 1991. Its defining classification, though, is by ageing rather than by estate: Genérico (formerly 'joven', little or no oak), and then the oak-and-bottle-aged tiers Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. For red wines the current minimums are: Crianza — 24 months total ageing with at least 12 in oak barrel; Reserva — 36 months total with at least 12 in oak and at least 6 in bottle; Gran Reserva — 60 months total with at least 24 in oak barrel and at least 24 in bottle. Many traditional houses exceed these minimums substantially.
