the real test
Does austere, mountain, neutral-oak, structure-first Cabernet — the anti-plush Napa — land as a love, isolating structure from New-World plushness within his home grape?
- if loved
- The structure preference holds across the New World when the wine is austere and unbuffered; any dislike of Napa is about plushness, not origin.
- if meh
- Even Cabernet can miss when it is austere, tightly wound and young — points back at fruit-buffering as necessary, not just a held line.
a test, not a verdict — this bottle is still in the cabinet
A mountain-grown, old-school Napa Cabernet: cassis, violet, and graphite over a firm, iron-and-tar frame built for the cellar — though 2019's ripeness lends it unusual flesh and power for Mayacamas.

2019 followed a wet winter that fully recharged soil water, then delivered a long, moderate, largely even growing season with no punishing heat spikes and a gentle, extended ripening into autumn. It is regarded as one of Napa's excellent, classically balanced recent vintages.
The even season gave Napa Cabernet both ripeness and freshness — deep fruit with firm structure and bright acidity, wines built to age. On Mount Veeder that translated to a concentrated, structured mountain Cabernet; critics noted 2019 lent this normally austere wine a little more opulence and flesh than usual.
Vineyard
Thin, rocky volcanic soils with uplifted marine-sedimentary rock; sharply drained and low in vigour.
Planted roughly 1,800-2,400 feet, above the Napa fog line; dry-farmed old vines yielding small, concentrated berries.
Estate mountain vineyards high on Mount Veeder, in the Mayacamas Range on the southwestern edge of Napa Valley.
In the cellar & winery
Fermented across concrete vats, stainless steel, and oak (a portion in cement, in the traditional Mayacamas manner).
Long, slow ageing built around large-format neutral oak foudres plus neutral French barriques, with very little new oak — roughly three years total in the cellar (house regime; vintage-specific figures not published).
Reductive and firmly structured in youth, made to reward extended cellaring rather than early drinking. Exact 2019 blend and ABV not published by the estate.
