expect to love

Does the structure love generalize beyond Cabernet — to single-variety Nebbiolo clarity, the collection's maximum of tannin + acid architecture (tar and roses over a firm frame)?

if loved
The structure preference is grape-agnostic — it holds for any single-variety, high-tannin, high-acid frame. Opens the whole Nebbiolo occasion lane (Barolo, Barbaresco, Taurasi).
if meh
The love may be Bordeaux/Cabernet-specific, or austere unbuffered tannin is a step too far — would sharpen the 'high tannin only when fruit-buffered' question and narrow the Italy occasion lane.

a test, not a verdict — this bottle is still in the cabinet

critics/consensus

Classic Serralunga Barolo from a benchmark vintage — pure red and dark cherry over tar and dried rose, wild herb and licorice, on a firm, tightly wound frame of high tannin and high acidity.

The vintage

A long, even, cool 2016 with no heat spikes: well-timed rains in July and August kept the vines balanced, and warm days with cool nights through September allowed a late, unhurried harvest.

One of the great modern Barolo vintages — a classic year of exceptional balance and harmony, combining ripe fruit, vibrant acidity and a powerful yet refined tannic structure built for long ageing. In structured Serralunga, 2016 is firm and monumental in its youth.

Vineyard

Older Serravallian/Helvetian calcareous marls (Lequio formation) — compact, limestone- and sandstone-rich, poor and stressing — the terroir behind Serralunga's structure.

The 'classico' is conceived to express the whole commune of Serralunga rather than a single named cru.

A blend of several parcels within Serralunga d'Alba (sources cited include Briccolina, Collareto, Brolio and Le Turne), with a small share of Castiglione Falletto fruit.

In the cellar & winery

Traditional vinification with a long maceration in temperature-controlled fermenters at around 30°C.

Aged up to about 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) — well beyond the DOCG's minimum of 18 months in wood within a 38-month total ageing — before release.

Classic large-cask, traditionalist style: no reliance on new French barrique.
