Mount Veeder AVA
Dark, firmly structured mountain Cabernet: concentrated cassis and black fruit framed by dense, gripping tannin, cool-toned herbal and mineral edges, and the acidity and backbone to age for decades.
Terroir
Thin, rocky, low-vigour mountain soils: a mix of ancient volcanic material and uplifted marine sedimentary rock (sandstone and shale from a former seabed), sharply drained and nutrient-poor.
Steep, forested slopes and ridgelines of the Mayacamas Mountains, with vineyards planted from roughly 500 up to about 2,400 feet — much of it above the valley fog line, so vines see more even sunlight and cooler, breezier conditions than the valley floor.
Elevation above the fog and poor mountain soils keep yields low and berries small, with a high skin-to-juice ratio. The result is Cabernet with firmer, more structured tannin, deep colour, bright acidity, and concentration built for the cellar — the mountain counterpoint to the plush, fruit-forward lushness of valley-floor Napa.

As with all such place associations, the mineral and 'foresty' impressions are classical tasting patterns, not literal transfer of rock into the glass (see docs/wine-pedagogy.md §3).
Classification
The United States uses no growth or estate ranking; place is defined by American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Mount Veeder was established as an AVA in 1990 and is a nested sub-appellation entirely within the larger Napa Valley AVA — one of Napa's classic mountain districts alongside Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, and Diamond Mountain.
