liked

Really liked, same frame as the Chablis: way dryer than his Pinot Gris/Grigio default, and better for it.

critics/consensus

Bone-dry Mosel Grosses Gewächs from the blue-slate sundial slope — pear and quince stretched over a taut, wet-stone and slate minerality, linear, salty, and long.

The vintage

A vintage of contrasts: a dry early summer, then significant rain in August that raised disease pressure, followed by the hottest September on record, which drove rapid ripening. Careful, selective picking was essential to bring in clean, healthy fruit.

2023 Mosel Rieslings are juicy, expressive, and generously fruited. The warmth favoured ripe, exuberant styles; the best dry GGs, made from carefully selected fruit, are concentrated yet retain the region's cool acidity and tension.

Vineyard

Blue and grey Devonian slate — dark, heat-retaining rock that stores the day's warmth and radiates it back to the vines at night.

Steep south-facing slope (gradients up to ~80–85%) rising directly above the Mosel; the river reflects extra light and warmth onto the vines. The old sundial in the vineyard once told the growers the time from across the water.

Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr, a VDP Grosse Lage; this bottling comes from the prime Falkenberg sector at the heart of the vineyard, by the sundial (Sonnenuhr).

In the cellar & winery

Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in the estate's traditional manner, in part in large old oak Fuder casks, generally with native yeasts (house regime; vintage-specific vessel not published).

Aged on its lees in cask/tank; the neutral old oak lends texture without oak flavour.

Bone-dry — about 1 g/l residual sugar, well inside the trocken threshold.
